Provenance according to handwritten note on bottom of paperweight: "This paperweight is made of a piece of hearth and a key of the chandelier from the north-east room, second story, of the old War Department building, now being torn down. This room was occupied by Secretary Stanton during the War of the Rebellion as his office, and by the succeeding secretaries of War to this date. Thos. Lincoln Casey, Lt. Col., Corps of Engrs. May 31, 1879."
