|Provenance||this miniature knife/tanto, which belongs to scabbard 1879.6.14-14, appears to be a miniature dagger made from a kozuka blade (the small knife in a sword scabbard). In the old records it is referred to as a "Gents pocket knife". It is part of a collection given to (and later purchased by) President Hayes in 1879 by a distant cousin, R. T. Hayes, of Los Angeles. This cousin was seeking an appointment to serve in some capacity in Japan.|
